Week 16 all but cemented the playoff picture for the AFC. It also cemented the New England Patriots’ dominance in the NFL. Week 16’s matchup vs the New York Jets was very entertaining to watch -for a Patriots fan. The AFC’s best destroyed their division rivals 41-3. The Patriots offense scored their first two touchdowns on simple post routes after the receivers burned the Jets’ secondary. The second of these two touchdowns was scored by Matt Lengel. Matt Lengel is a 25 year old man from Pennsylvania who had never caught a pass in a professional football game before this one. His first catch was a touchdown, and guess who it was from, frontrunner in the MVP race Tom Brady. When Tom begins to get comfortable in the pocket, his throws become rhythmic. Add that to the lack of awareness from the Jets defensive backs, and the league’s best quarterback begins “to operate like a metronome and complete passes like this.” In total, Brady threw for 214 yards along with 3 touchdowns and a passer rating of 124.6. Feature back Legarrette Blount also had a stellar performance with 2 rushing touchdowns, with the help of his favorite blocker, fullback James Develin. In a recent interview, Develin stated that he would block for Blount his whole life, showing that their is a very strong connection between these players.

The New England Patriots also established dominance on the other side of the football. The New England Defense caused four turnovers. Superbowl XLIX(49) hero Malcolm Butler had a monster performance against the Jets. He intercepted the football on two occasions, and also recovered a fumble from the Jets offense. The Patriots defense did so well, the only reason Bryce Petty was in the Box sore was because he threw an interception. Petty was later carted off due to injury and replaced by veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick. Defensive back Eric Rowe also picked off Ryan Fitzpatrick. All in All, the defense intercepted the ball 3 times recovered a forced fumble and held the Jets to only 8 completions for 128 yards. With this performance the New England defense is ranked first in points allowed per game, 8th in yards per game, and 3rd in rushing yards per game. Despite being an elite corner, Malcolm Butler will not be playing in the Pro Bowl due to not being voted for. However, he is still one of the best corners in the NFL. This victory is significant to the Patriots, but thy must be prepared for next week.
